I've been using YYYYMMDD for years. When I needed to a time, I use YYYYMMDDhhmmss. I'd never seen it anywhere, I thought of it independently. I just wanted something that made sense.

Wheeler (he of the Wheeler cap). He used the date format YYYYMMDD without any hyphens. He also explained why he used it. I agree with his conclusions, and find it completely unambiguous and also useful in spreadsheets and programming, because of the inherent numerical order taken as one large number. Also, to comment less constructively on John Woodgate's comment, "For a REAL unique time....." It reminds me of the little message cards you'd find in public telephone kiosks in London (pre-cell era) which often had messages of the same variety, i.e., "For a REAL unique time, call 061 555 1234, ask for Candy."
