Hello ladies and gentlemen, Let's say you're making a computer that is designed to accept Wi-Fi cards. Let's assume that the Wi-Fi cards will be installed by the customer and that the Wi-Fi cards carry the appropriate approvals (i.e. FCC for US and CE mark for Europe).
When it comes to compliance testing your product (the computer) for FCC and CE...what is the appropriate plan of attack? Do you test with a "typical" card and then inform the user in the user's documentation what approvals to look for when they buy cards? Do you test with each and every card that you would plan on a customer using and then inform the user of which cards are "approved" for use with your product? Does Wi-Fi fall under the type of equipment that needs to be licensed for Europe by a notified body as an intentional radiator? If so, who bears the burden of licensing...the Wi-Fi card maker or the computer maker? What about SAR testing...will a Wi-Fi card in a computer require SAR testing? If so...again...who bears the burden of this? As a follow on question, is there any data that would lead one to believe that one type of card is typically worse than another (801.11a vs 801.11b vs 801.1g...) As always, the opinions of my esteemed (and the un-esteemed) colleagues is appreciated. Chris Maxwell Since I work for myself, these are definitely my own opinions...if I get sued because of them...the sue-er will probably be out of luck...unless they want to get paid in livestock or offspring. :-) - This message is from the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society emc-pstc discussion list.
