I think it can be changed back.

If the core is a closed magnetic circuit, it remains magnetized after 
the pulse is over. This substantially reduces the incremental 
permeability. It can probably be 'degaussed' in the usual way by 
applying a damped or manually reduced sinusoidal current, initially 
equal to the peak pulse current.

Maybe someone could try this and report back. Some ferrite cores, and 
possibly all iron dust cores, have non-magnetic constituents that act as 
distributed air-gaps and these cannot be 'permanently' magnetized.
