I have come across a definition of SELV that says SELV (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) Circuit a SECONDARY CIRCUIT - in which the voltage cannot exceed ELV under normal and single fault conditions, and - with protective separation from systems other than SELV or PELV, and - with no provision for earthing the SELV-system, or its exposed conductive parts, and - with simple separation from earth
There is no definition given of "simple separation" and I can't find where the definition came from. Questions: 1. Does anyone recognize this definition? It's not from 60950-1:2001. I think it might be from the IEC Electrotechnical Vocabulary but I don't have access to that. 2. I assume "simple separation" is as opposed to "protective separation". If that's the case, I read this as saying that SELV needs to be unearthed, but only separated from earth by Functional insulation. Agree? Disagree? Thanks, Jim Eichner, P.Eng.
