Here is an update of the details for our first meeting of 2007. More information has been included on Richard Marshall's talk. The event is free to all, but please note the requirement to register in advance. The afternoon meeting allows for cheaper rail tickets! Best wishes Brian Brian Jones EMC Consultant and Competent Body signatory EMC Chapter Chairman UK & Republic of Ireland The first meeting will be held on 28 March at the Strand Campus, King's College London, London WC2R 2LS http:// ww.kcl.ac.uk/about/campuses/strand-det.html Location: Room: STD/2B08 The room is in the KCL Strand Building (the large structure right on the Strand) and is down on the 2nd basement level. Access is via the lifts or the staircase at the back of the main reception area. A refectory is available on the site for those attending to buy lunch if they wish. The theme of this first meeting will be: Topical EMC issues. Our subjects and speakers for this event will be as follows. Peter Howick, DTI The new EMC Regulations SI 2006 No. 3418, implementing the new EMC Directive 2004/108/EC, has been published, and comes fully into force on 20 July 2007. From that date all new Declarations of Conformity for apparatus must be to the new Directive, although apparatus with valid declarations issued prior to that date may be placed on the market before 20 July 2009 and put into service. There are relaxed requirements for apparatus intended for incorporation into a given fixed installation and otherwise not commercially available, and new requirements for those who have control of a fixed installation. The mandatory requirement for third-party involvement for apparatus for which harmonised standards have not been applied in full is removed, but there are additional documentation requirements, in line with other new approach directives. Martin Wright, BT Forthcoming EMC standards for multimedia equipment Two new standards, CISPR 32 and 35, are in development. When published in Europe as EN 55032 and EN 55035, they will replace existing standards for broadcast receivers and information technology equipment, EN 55013, EN 55020, EN 55022 and EN 55024. They are also expected to replace the EMC standards for AV and lighting control apparatus for professional use, EN 55103 parts 1 and 2. CISPR 35 introduces a new concept of considering individual functions for immunity performance rather than product types, since the latter are becoming increasingly meaningless as products incorporate ever more features. Martin is Chairman of the standards committee responsible for these standards, and will tell us the latest position. Richard Marshall MA CEng FIET, Richard Marshall Limited Cables Untangled * The Direction of Cable Emission means that it is often missed Briefly introduces some work by NPL and published in Compliance Engineering Magazine for July 2006 and emphasises its implications for EMC testing. * Cable Resonance tunes some frequencies for efficient emission Describes some current work for the RSGB related to interference to short-wave reception due to emission from TV sets. We have been able to study the mode of interference propagation, and find that it has implications not only for the Multimedia standard but also for PLT. This item will be just a glimpse of work that will be fully documented later this year . * "Invisible" cable Bundling; Is it necessary and possible? Summarises Richard's previous presentation on “Invisible" cable bundling at the EMC-UK 2006 Conference and includes a clear recommendation for test laboratory practise. EMC requirements for radio equipment Radio modules are increasingly being fitted to a wide range of products, from personal digital assistants and laptops to industrial systems. What are the technical requirements, and do the radio standards apply to the complete finished equipment? Steve will offer guidance to manufacturers and system integrators.
