Information available on speakers and talks: Measurement methods for emission above 1 GHz. Martin Alexander, NPL. An increasing number of EMC standards now include requirements above 1 GHz. Deficiencies have been identified in the current test method specified in the basic standards CISPR 16 and EN 55016. A revision is currently in progress, treading a difficult path between time and cost of testing, and the need for meaningful measurements, based on sound methodology. A new committee draft of the revision to the standards will be available shortly. Martin, who is a leading light in this work, will describe the latest position and the implications for laboratories and industry. >From 1974 to 1988 Martin worked for the Antenna Division of the GEC-Marconi >Research Centre designing transmission line components and antennas. Since >1988 he has worked for NPL where he designed and developed a facility for the >calibration of dipole and monopole antennas in the frequency range 30 Hz to 5 >GHz. This broke new ground with uncertainties as low as ( 0.1 dB achievable >for the gain of omni-directional VHF and UHF antennas. He is an active member >of CISPR/A. His current interests are 1) reducing the uncertainty of the evaluation of EMC test sites by championing the reference site method in CISPR, 2) developing measurement methods to reduce the uncertainties of emission measurements above 1 GHz, 3) commissioning RF-optical components and developing methods to make non-invasive measurements of antennas and of field distributions. Ayhan Günsaya is the head of EMC in Ford of Europe and is based in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the Middlesex University with a first class BEng degree in electronics engineering and management and subsequently completed an MSc in electromagnetic compatibility and radio frequency communications at the University of York. He has worked in the field of automotive EMC since joining Ford Motor Company in 1996 and has been involved in various aspects of this disciple from component level design for EMC and testing to vehicle level standards development and legal certification. Mr Gunsaya is a member of the Automotive EMC laboratory Accreditation Program (AEMCLRP) and leads laboratory recognitions in Europe. He also represents Ford Motor Company in UK and European legislative forums and participated in the development of 2004/104/EC EMC development over the last 40 years. Tony Maddocks. In the sixties and seventies the main interests in commercial EMC were associated with emissions from motor vehicle ignition circuits, appliances in the home having commutator motors, and the early triac controls in lamp dimmers. Commercial computers needed to be able to withstand transient and surge disturbances on the mains supply and considerable work was done to ensure reliability in computer installations and many of the measurement and assessment principles developed internationally at the time are still is use today. The introduction of microprocessor devices in the 1980s made a big difference in that the interference from transients, surges and rf fields and ESD could result in total failure of large building central heating control systems. The IEC 801 series of immunity standards was introduced and practical performance was achieved, but with more assessment and approval required at the prototype stage of ! the development. There was later expansion to cover the seven major phenomena that need to be considered for immunity and with the practical introduction of the EMC Directive in 1996 the markets for acceptable products were expanded. Tony started with research and then moved into product testing and consultation, and will recollect some of his experiences over the years. Aerospace EMC Qualification – Implementation of Recent Changes. Dr Luke Turnbull. This presentation describes the physical implementation of changes to the aerospace test standards. Although the changes are quite a few years old, the requirement for testing to these standards is quite recent and the test levels are being driven up by the sudden growth of the use of composites in the airframes of aircraft such as Airbus A380 and Boeing 787. The specification and introduction of equipment for indirect lightning tests and free field HIRF tests at levels above 3000 V/m will be described. Luke graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with an Honours degree in Physics and worked as a Research Assistant for the Electromagnetic Compatibility Group of the University of York, while gaining a D. Phil degree. Luke then worked for DERA / QinetiQ for five years on projects including setting up and running an antenna calibration facility, compiling a Defence Standard concerning Electromagnetic Environments, researching test methods for new EMC standards, and setting up an EMC laboratory in a satellite manufacturing company in southern Siberia. Luke is now the EMC Technical Manager for TRW Conekt where he has worked for the past 5 years. Over the past two years he has implemented a €1M investment in equipment for indirect lightning tests and HIRF tests for Aerospace equipment. The event is an open meeting. All welcome.
