Hello Peter:

At one time, I addressed this problem by obtaining
complementary certification, both as IT and as MED
(non-patient), for a printer.

After that, we didn't do any more printer MED
certifications as medical customers simply did not
require or request the MED certification. They were
happy with the IT certification.

In the many years I've been doing product safety,
I've not had any further inquiry for MED certification
even though we sold many units into medical facilities.

You can do complementary certification which you KNOW
is acceptable, or you can ask your marketing folks if
there is a customer demand for MED certification. I
believe you will find that medical customers accept IT
certification for the uses you describe.

If IT safety is getting to be a drag, try MED complementary
certification for a challenge in both the design and
the certification. In typical cert houses, the IT
engineers and MED engineers don't know each other and
don't talk to each other. I found they would rather turn
down the business than try to work out a complementary
certification!

Enjoy!
Rich

Subject: Printer/scanner for medical environment

Hello Team,

We are designing an IT equipment (Printer/scanner) that not only can be used
in an office, but also can be used in medical environment. Here the product
could be in doctor or nurses offices but by no means near any patient or in
contact with a patient. My question is that does the product have to meet the
medical standard? Or will IEC60950 standard be sufficient. How do PC
manufacturers deal with similar issues on their products? The product is used
by medical staff to print patient records or prescriptions or to scan medical
records.

Thank you
Peter
