This is delicious. This capability is built into Python. Problems like this is why engineers and scientists use Python in lieu of Fortran and Java. This is a job for NumPy (queue Underdog theme song).
If your desire to use VB, pl, or (ugh) Java is overwhelming, note that Python source is very readable.
