Japanese authorities are investigating reports of a fire involving one of Appleās iPod Nano digital music players. The 2GB iPod Nano emitted sparks and ignited when the built-in lithium ion battery apparently overheated while being recharged.
Reports of notebook PC battery fires and explosions forced Sony to spend more than $400m on a recall in 2006. Last month, South Korea's LG Electronics announced that it had stopped making a popular laptop after two reports of fires or explosions related to its battery. The exact cause of the battery explosion apparently remains unknown. Nowadays, more and more devices are using rechargeable batteries. It is very scary with such incidents appeared from time to time. It seems the device makers are making unknown timed bombs every day and no one is stopping it. In the past, I will leave the pcs with ac/dc adaptor connected or rechargeable batteries on charge at night from time to time. Now, I will not conduct any unattended battery charge. I have learnt that IEC organization is reviewing the relevant standard in order to publish an appropriate and up-to-date standard to address this issue. In the interim, I wish there is some temporary solutions to fill the gap. Has anyone heart anything about it?
