For the motor control it would be, from the Low Voltage Directive EN 60947-1:2007 Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear -- Part 1: General rules IEC 60947-1:2007 However, by the sounds of it, the Machinery Directive should also be considered. Not sure if that got rolled into a part 2 of 60947 or separate Standard. ----- Reply message ----- From: "Ted Eckert" <[email protected]> List-Post: [email protected] Date: Fri, Jan 21, 2011 3:51 pm Subject: [PSES] Motor controller standards To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Hello Doug, I’ll tackle the North American side of this discussion. I believe UL 508C <http://ulstandardsinfonet.ul.com/scopes/scopes.asp?fn=0508C.html> is the standard for the United States. Its scope states “These requirements cover open or enclosed equipment that supplies power to control a motor or motors operating at a frequency or voltage different than that of the input supply.” This is the standard my former employer used for their AC drives and soft starts <http://products.schnei er-electric.us/products-services/products/ac-drives-and-soft-starts/> . This standard corresponds to CAN/CSA-22.2 No. 14. The system is comprised of a group of modules that can be connected via ethernet with a control console, auxilliary modules and hoist motor controllers to build a customized system. I am considering using EN 60950-1 as the base standard for the system as it uses some integrated industrial PC's, but I'm a bit stumped on what the appropriate electrical safety standard for the drive module would be. The module uses an off-the-shelf VFD, with some custom boards for emergency stop and communications, all integrated into a single box. Any thoughts would be appreciated! -- Doug Nix, A.Sc.T.
