I seek your advice on how to ‘best’ properly protect a 24 volt dc Output
port on a piece of Laboratory Equipment (UL/IEC/EN 61010-1).

Here is the situation:

AC to DC power supply that can output 24Vdc at 50 amps which goes to a DC
Distribution PC Card. This card has several IC chips known as either a Smart
Switch or High Side Driver which we use to turn on and off the 24Vdc output
which exits our enclosure on an Output Port.

The High Side Driver (HSD) ICs provides a nominal output current of 4.2 amps
and over current protection shutting down the output at 8 amps (also has over
temperature protection at 150ºC). Our output connector and wiring can handle
8 amps.

Since the HSD is not a certified over current protection device I assume I
must consider a fault in this part providing 50 amps to the Output Port. Is
this correct?

If so, I would need to add an overcurrent protection device. In this case,
what would you recommend? Can Polyfuses (resettable PTCs) be used in this
application? We prefer a self resettable device over a one-shot device but we
are considering a fuse, picofuse, or circuit breaker.

What if we used two HSD circuits in series where both would have to fault?
Would this be acceptable?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

The Other Brian
