Hi Jim:
I know from my work with telecom equipment that the lightning environment in
Australia is quite severe. From your description, it sounds like the failure
mode appears to be from long term overheating, not a short surge, so lightning
would not be the first suspect.
However, one possibility that should be evaluated is whether the equipment
could have sustained damage from a lightning surge that caused an intermediate
failure mode of excess heating. Eventually this excess heating could lead to
a final failure mode that *appears* to be from excessive AC mains voltages,
even though the AC mains voltage was actually within normal tolerances.
