I suffered similar trauma almost 10 years past when I went from a happy and simple-minded code monkey to a confused and amazed safety/compliance guy (and the 'confused' condition is a permanent change).
Attend the annual PSES symposium, then stay for one of the UL courses. Read all back issues of the IEEE PSES newsletter. Do not limit your studies to 1010; also, this standard has a few problems. Look at some CDFs for your company's existing products - note the ratings and the specific standards required for components - become familiar with these. Be familiar with electric codes and how they will affect regional use of your product. Develop a good working relationship with senior agency engineers. Talk to the safety/compliance engineers of your component suppliers - if you buy component power supplies, specifically strive to develop a good relationship with your power supply safety engineers. If your employer has other safety engineers, ask many questions about both the 'how' and 'why' of Type Tests. Expect positions, that perform only safety engineering, to eventually be outsourced. luck, Brian From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of John Harrington Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 7:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Safety Testing Training Hi All After nearly 20 years solely in the realm of EMC testing my role has changed to include product safety testing. I have a very steep learning curve ahead of me. Can anyone suggest or recommend training courses and / or texts? Something with a strong practical foundation. My focus will be 61010. If your company offers such training feel free to contact me offline. A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. it's always of benefit if that step is in the right direction!
