Hi John,

In addition, if your product is a cellular-type wireless product, then the car
adapter must be included in the EN 301489 series of EMC immunity testing of
the product. Included in that is a requirement to test against ISO 7637-2 if
the product’s input power is derived from a vehicle.

For safety in the EU, there’s no actual requirement due to the input voltage
limitations of the LVD and the Automotive Dir is an EMC-style directive, but
there is the General Product Liability Directive. And, UL 2089 doesn’t
appear to specifically apply. However with that said, it has been general
practice in my experience to demonstrate due diligence in obtaining or
requiring a CB report against IEC 60950-1. Sometimes to cut down expenses,
safety evaluations of wireless products have included the car adapter, but
that’s sometimes not practical or possible.

>From a liability and due diligence perspective, I quite agree with you and
others who have responded to your email. This is one area where “Legal”
can work for you. :-)

Also, my understanding of the e mark is that from the Automotive Directive’s
scope, it applies only to vehicles and to electrical/electronic subassemblies
(ESA) “fitted” in/to vehicles, thereby not applying to temporarily
pluggable accessories. This of course comes down to the interpretation of the
term “fitted”. I stand to be corrected on this by the more knowledgeable
members of the group.

IHTH.

Best regards,

Ron

Subject: [PSES] Auto cigarette lighter charger requirements

Hello everyone,

We are looking at a car adapter/ charger for one of our products and I wanted
to get some opinions on what the possible mandatory regulatory requirements
might be.

For past chargers we required the following for North America

UL Listing to UL2089

CSA Approval to: CSA Technical Information Letter No.I-35, in addition to one
or more of the following:

CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 107.1, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 107.2. CAN/CSC22.2 No.223.

Our vendor recommended CB approval to IEC60950. And for EMC the e-mark is
required from what I understand.

Questions

1. Does anyone have an opinion if the UL and CSA approvals are legally
required or just good to haves?

2. For the EU are there any safety approvals required or again is a CB
report just a nice to have.

I ask as I am getting push back here about having to get the approvals and I
have made my case why it makes sense, from a liability point of view, to have
approvals but it would be helpful to know if these types of devices must have
Safety certifications.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to opinions……..
