You are invited to the Northeast Product Safety Society’s 22nd annual
membership dinner meeting tomorrow, May 26th, at the Holiday Inn,
Boxborough MA featuring Dave Burns, Product Safety Investigator with the
Consumer Product Safety Commission.  Dave Burns will discuss the US
Consumer Product Safety Council (CPSC) and their role in protecting the
consumer.

If you will be in the area this tomorrow, please consider joining us for
dinner and the opportunity to mingle with interesting people involved
with product safety.  If you are not yet an NPSS member, this is a great
opportunity for you to become a member.  Further information about the

A buffet dinner with choice of London Broil, New England Haddock and
Vegetarian Lasagna entrée,  salad, assorted vegetables and potato, rice
or pasta will be served.  Dessert will include assorted apple crisp,
pies, coffee, and tea.  Coffee service will be available at 5:00 PM and
the cash bar will open at 6:00 PM.  The dinner service will begin at
7:00 PM.  If you require a secondary entrée selection, please indicate
your primary and secondary choices when you make your reservation and
every effort will be made to provide it.

If you are planning to attend please make your reservations today or as
soon as possible so NPSS may make proper accommodations with the hotel
for the number of people attending.  If you are planning to attend,

NPSS members whose dues are paid before or at registration.  Non-NPSS
members are charged a $35 nominal fee.  All attendees are asked to check
in at a sign-up table which will be available at registration for dues
payments by new or existing members.  Bring a business card and we can
speed things up at registration by scanning it.  Please provide any
special dietary requirements information with your reservation
confirmation and every attempt will be made to provide for your needs.

David Burns is a Product Safety Investigator with the US Consumer
Product Safety Commission, based in Southern New Hampshire, and has been
with them since March.  David’s job functions include determining
compliance with CPSC regulations, laws and product standards and
identifying potential, substantial and imminent hazards as well as
collecting legal evidence sufficient to support claims of non-compliance
with applicable Federal law, and serving as primary fact witness for the
government in litigation and administrative hearings.  This work
includes all areas of incident investigation including Failure Analysis,
Corrective Action, Containment, and Recommendations.  Detailed reports
suitable for legal actions are also part of David’s work.  David majored
in criminal justice and has a BS and MA from Northeastern University.

Dave’s topic will cover the US Consumer Product Safety Council (CPSC)
and their role in protecting the consumer.  Mr. Burns will cover areas
such as the structure of the CPSC, their mission, role, and powers, the
primary markets and industries they are primarily concerned.   He will
also cover the role that standards play in the work of the CPSC and how
CPSC works with industry and consumers in failure analysis, corrective
action, and accident prevention.  Last but not least, also discussed
will be what and how we as product safety, compliance, and regulatory
engineers can do and need to be aware of in terms of the CPSC.
