For those who are unaware, the European Commission has launched a
consultation on European standardisation. You can see more details of
the consultation at:

http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/policies
european-standards/public-consultation/index_en.htm

One could easily lose the will to live while wading through the acres
of waft which this sort of consultation generates, and if you want to
see what I mean, BSi's response is available on line at:

http://feedback.bsigroup.com/Home/Details/497

(Registration required to access)

BSI's response to question 13 about the costs of standards is a
particularly prize example of self-serving nonsense.

I've taken the bold (and probably futile, but life's too short to
play the games of these career bureaucrats) step of ignoring the main
part of the consultation and just using the reply e-mail address on
the Commission's site to send a short message making what I think are
two key points (I'm not going to repeat them here because I don't
particularly want to open a debate about them on this forum, but they
concern cost and transparency.)

I suppose there is only a small chance that anyone will take the
comments seriously, but sending them has made me feel better!

I'd encourage anyone else who feels strongly on this topic to at
least send some sort of response to the Commission, no matter how
brief.

The consultation closes on 21 May.

Nick.
