Here is a full report of a study on “An Examination of Sudden Acceleration”, 
created by the NHTSA in January of 1989. This document gives you a good look at 
their methodology of inquiry, covering everything from mechanical to EMI to 
psychological aspects of sudden acceleration. I believe that, in 1989, on-board 
computers were not storing vehicle performance data, but other than that, this 
20 year old document seems to address everything we are currently speculating 
about.
