Hi Rich and the group,

A friend, a real rocket scientist, had someone he knows experience the
unintended acceleration in a Toyota. He had the presence of mind to put
his foot under the accelerator pedal and pull up hard. The car continued
to accelerate. Sounds like software to me.

There is another problem I observe on the road here in California that
is going to be a recall. About 1/3 of the Toyotas I see have it. The
exhaust system hangs very low (and gets lower with time). I have seen
one that was all the way to the ground and sparking on every bump. But,
most I have seen are just the lowest thing under the car by far, about
1/2 way between the car and the ground. It is easy to see from behind or
one lane to the left and behind some Toyotas. One of my engineering
friends in the automotive field says it is a known problem and explained
the mechanical details to me. The end stage is the pipes and muffler
drop out of the car (probably when a ridge in the road it hit by the
muffler) although that stage is apparently very rare. I have observed
this for a few years now and wonder why a recall has not happened on
this one. When I see this, I will not follow directly behind that Toyota.
