I second Brents comments.

If you want to have something cheap and cheerful, just use an off shore 
sourced power supply. You most likely won't even have to take the filter 
out...

There is a reason good site sources cost so much. I have researched them 
a lot as well as designed a few for our proficiency program. Of all the 
sources, my preference is for the spherical radiators. I feel these are 
less affected by their surroundings and more consistent than a box with 
a rod sticking out.

It's no good getting an awesome source and then not taking the stand 
into account....

It all depends on your goal.
