Joint Meeting
Woman in Engineering and the IEEE EMC Society
How EMC Benefits Society
"Funny as they may be Dilbert cartoons reflect a rather unflattering view of
the profession of engineering. Beyond attraction to the technical world and
stereo-typed social skills lies an aspect of engineering rarely portrayed -
how our technical work helps people. This presentation gives a perspective
on that by means of an EMC example."
Sharon Phillips is the present Secretary of the IEEE Chicago Section
Executive Committee. She is a Sr. Member of the IEEE and a member of the
Communications Society, the EMC Society, and IEEE-Women In Engineering.

Ms. Phillips is an RF engineer with a long service history at Motorola where
she first worked in Motorola's Chicago Corporate Research & Development
organization on development of test systems in the areas of single-sideband
in the land-mobile environment, spectral efficiency for 2nd generation
cellular, and data transmission in the ISM band indoor environment. Her
work impacted NAMPS, TDMA, GSM, and IEEE802.11 standards development.
Later she helped form the research organization in the Cellular Subscriber
Group (now know as the Mobile Devices business) where she worked on
prototypes for including new technologies such as GPS, High-Density
Interconnect, and low-power headsets in cellular phones and improving cell
phone call performance through statistical analysis.
Ms. Phillips holds a BSEE from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MSEE
>from Illinois Institute of Technology, and Six Sigma BlackBelt
Certification. Her eight patent awards include that which made her the
first woman at Motorola to be awarded a patent and later one named in the
Motorola portfolio of Essential GSM Patents.
