Steve:
Canadian Standards have somewhere in the list of normative references CSA C22.2 No. 0, “General Requirements – Canadian Electrical Code, Part II.” In that standard, Clause 5.3 says: 5.3 Language of Markings 5.3.1 Caution and warning markings shall be in English and French except as permitted by Clause 5.3.3. 5.3.2 Individual Standards shall include the French translation of the markings (in an appendix). Note: The preferred French translations of the words WARNING and CAUTION are AVERTISSEMENT and ATTENTION, respectively. 5.3.3 Where the product is intended for use outside Canada, caution and warning markings may be in other languages. So, if you have “caution” or “warning” markings, and you have an NRTL mark showing use in both the US and Canada Listing, then you will need to get French translations. If your Listing mark does not have the “C” for Canada, or your product does not bear the traditional CSA mark, then you will not need French translations. This would allow Listing/Certification with English only labels and manuals I have recently been informed by another NRTL/SCC approved 3rd party that this is no longer the case and that any products they certify for CDN must have bi-lingual labels. Remember that these are not consumer products and they may or may not be sold in CDN. Anyone have any recent experience with or comments on this? - This message is from the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society emc-pstc discussion list.
