Safety Engineer
Location: San Diego, CA

Position Summary:
This position is for a Product Safety Engineer within the Platform
Hardware Development group. This position is responsible for the
planning, testing, working with safety agencies and achieving product
safety certifications for Teradata platform hardware. Teradata platforms
are comprised of enterprise class IT equipment designed to meet the
highest levels of reliability, availability and serviceability. Teradata
products are sold in over 70 countries worldwide. The successful
candidate will be responsible for assessing product designs, product
modifications, and, working with testing labs to achieve appropriate
certifications for worldwide product sales.
Specific responsibilities involve: 
*       Act as Product Safety Certifier for Teradata; inspect, test and
photograph products for conformity assessment with international
regulations, with the end result being the certificate of conformance
for the product. 
*       Review reports and documentation for certification of Teradata
products to the appropriate standards from testing labs. Preliminary
Evaluations and Certifications activities.
*       Correspond, verbally, and in writing, with Product Safety
Agencies such as UL, Nemko, CSA and TUV with respect to Product Design
Approaches for Safety.
*       Correspond verbally and in writing with Teradata product
management, and field service personnel on issues related to product
safety and certification to standards for all countries Teradata sells
products to.
*       Perform Factory Inspections and field evaluation services to UL
and CSA requirements.
*       Provide analysis and strategic direction for Teradata hardware
product development on new and emerging safety regulations worldwide.
Basic Requirements
*       A BS in Electrical Engineering, product safety, mechanical or
computer engineering or equivalent
*       A minimum of 10 years ITE Product Safety experience is
preferred.  
*       Knowledge of European directives and standards
*       Knowledge of worldwide product safety standards, regulations and
certification processes.
*       Knowledge of Windows, MS Office and electronic mail necessary.
2-4 years experience in materials technology or within equipment
manufacturing industries. 
*       Proactive approach in identifying and resolving issues - able to
work independently and escalate and seek help when necessary
*       Ability to multi-task multiple programs/projects simultaneously
*       Good verbal and written communication skills
*       Works effectively as part of a large team
*       Microsoft Office competency
Preferred Requirements
*       Master of Science in any of the aforementioned disciplines
*       Engineering Change Control experience
*       Extensive experience with product safety in countries outside
the US
