For IP66, the answer is "none shall pass". Which is where a IPx7 or x8 item will usually have a 6 in place of the x, if it is water tight it is usually dust tight. I have seen several potted products where it was dust tight, but not water. It failed to function after water testing.
To Nick's heating/cooling comment, I agree with you, but the general standard does not have the requirement; there are some product family variants that do (such as luminaries). -Doug Kramer From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mark Hone Sent: Thursday, September 03, 2009 12:07 PM To: Subject: Re: IP Rating on Class 2 Powered LED Fixture Colleagues - John Woodgate <[email protected]> 03/09/09 16:55:10 >>> > IP ratings are only about penetration of the > enclosure, not about whether a product is safe or not. If stuff gets in, > it's not IP68. For dust and water penetration, does the Standard say how much can get in? A gram? A milligram? A microgram? Or is it that if you can see anything, it;'s too much? (With glasses on, or without?) Just curious, I haven't (yet) had to get anything qualified.
