Robert Bonsen Technology Strategist HP/PPS/CMIT/BNB Job Description The Business Notebook Group, inside the Commercial Managed IT Division, develops mobile computing products and solutions aimed at the Small / Medium Business (SMB) and large Commercial / Corporate customers. The hardware development group is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Platform Development and Engineering Team as a senior regulatory engineer and product steward for Commercial Managed IT/enterprise mobile solutions. This team will develop next generation notebook computers, business tablets, and mobile computing solutions. We are looking for an individual who has background in and is able to develop expertise in a variety of areas. Job summary HP is hiring a seasoned regulatory engineer and product steward (REPS) to join the mobile product regulatory team. The focus of the position is on tactical R&D aspects of compliance and market-access EMC, safety and environmental regulations. The REPS is the primary tactical expert, interfacing between the notebook R&D teams and Product Stewardship, Marketing and Supply Chain on product-specific regulatory and environmental issues. The REPS is also responsible for ensuring the ODM, HP Product Stewardship and the HP Agency team are able to achieve milestones as defined by project schedules and management needs. Roles and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * drive the ODM to meet existing and new regulatory and environmental requirements, as defined by the regulatory strategy team * participate in the regulatory strategy team as the tactical product specialist * work in close concert with the regulatory strategy lead, Agency lead and overseas support team to ensure seamless regulatory coverage * develop and improve engineering test processes as needed to improve product quality and ensure regulatory due diligence * work closely with the HP Agency team to ensure critical milestones are met in a timely manner, and serve as the primary escalation path to R&D and the ODM for Agency and Product Stewardship issues * consultant to R&D and Quality teams on subjects of EMC, intra-system noise, ESD, safety, materials, energy, etc., including board design, component selection and mechanical design * own the R&D NPI deliverables and cross-functional coordination for RoHS, ISO 14001 certification, energy topics, product environmental documentation, acoustics and ergonomics * be primary point of contact for product specific inquiries with respect to EMC, safety and environmental issues * work with regional business steams on the implementation of legislation requiring in-country testing The REPS will be part of the cross-platform R&D team supporting NPI and sustaining activities, as well as forward-looking mobile projects. Essential skills/capabilities * Proven ability to leverage the ODM model, and improve on it, to achieve best-in-class product performance * Excellent communication and negotiation skills to assist in defining internal and external standards and implementation plans * Ability to clearly communicate with ODM partners to track and verify existing requirements, and help drive new requirements into the ODM regulatory process * Working knowledge of EMC/Safety/Environmental regulatory and voluntary standards as applicable to notebook computers * Understanding of WW approval processes and Agency activities * Ability to provide EMC, safety and environmental engineering input into the early design process through mechanical design reviews, schematic and board reviews, and component selection recommendations * Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, root-cause and mitigate EMC/safety/environmental issues at minimal impact to the program * Understanding of mechanical design, mobile architecture and I/O interfaces, as it pertains to EMC, safety, wireless and environmental engineering Desired skills/capabilities: * Working knowledge of Energy Star and other world-wide regulatory energy standards, and relevant test methodologies * Working knowledge of RoHS, REACH, acoustics, safety techniques HBSE, ITE ergonomics * Understanding of EPEAT point structure and how this pertains to mobile products * Working knowledge of military and avionics EMC or TEMPEST, as well as hazardous location and medical safety * Understanding of intra-system noise challenges posed by multiple wireless interfaces in close proximity to the system Experience * Bachelor's (undergraduate) degree/Master's (graduate) degree in electrical or computer engineering or equivalent. * 10+ years of experience in regulatory engineering for ITE and 2+ years of experience in environmental engineering or product stewardship Travel * Occasional travel may be required to support regulatory activities (domestic and international), target <10% - ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message is from the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society emc-pstc discussion list.
