John Pink, EMC Consultant. 15:15 Meeting close. Information available on presentations and speakers: The NLF and the new EMC Directive" - David Imeson Consultant Emeritus. The New Legal Framework (NLF) was published in 2008 as Regulation 765/2008 and Decision 768/2008. As a regulation 765/2008 came into force immediately. This forced the need to review all the new approach directives and it was decided to revise 9 of them at one go in the so-called Omnibus directive. Others such as the R&TTE directive and the Medical Device Directive are being revised separately. Both the LVD and the EMC directives are included in the Omnibus directive. The intention was to revise each directive only in so far as it was necessary to meet the new legal provisions of the NLF and that there should be no consideration of the scope of the directives. The problem is that this 'one size fits all' did not lead to as simple a rewrite as was expected and so may have precipitated unintended consequences. Britain's biggest EMC challenge - how the radio spectrum was kept clean for the Olympics. John Pink. Retired from full time employment, John does some occasional consultancy on EMC matters. He was formerly Managing director of Anritsu UK, the culmination of a long career in the test instrumentation sector, with Hewlett Packard, Scientific Atlanta and Wandel&Goltermann. He established the design and manufacturing arm of Wiltron Company in the UK, specialising in precision Microwave Power measurements, and Network Analysis. Wiltron was later purchased by Anritsu. John was involved in CISPR standards development as long ago as 1970, and was able to return as a contributor to this endeavour on retirement in 2001, this time as an active radio user. He has been a radio amateur since school days. As an IARU EMC WG member he shares responsibility for on-going work on CISPR A (Measurement Methods) and CISPR H (Interference Models). The most recent activity has been on TC210/WG11, with the development of EN50561-1. Retaining a keen interest in all aspects of EMC from low frequencies up to the low microwave range, ever watchful as new technology is rolled-out, with particular concern for Plasma devices, LED lighting incorporating SM power conversion and Solar energy harvesting systems. As a member of the augmented Ofcom Field Engineering team John worked at the Olympic park for the duration of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Appliances & EMC - The Dyson approach - Fabio Scalon - Principal Engineer with Dyson Ltd Fabio received his education in Italy where he completed a 5 years course on electronics engineering, receiving the degree in 1994 at the University of Padua. He spent 10 years working for a company designing and manufacturing SMPS for a wide range of applications (commercial, industrial, audio-video, medical, railways, military). The EMC challenge was just behind the corner, when in 1996 the world realised that the EMC Directive was, actually, coming into force! At that time he decided to start the EMC job and built up his knowledge until he realised that EMC is much more than bringing to compliance a mere "noisy" sub-assembly. Fabio moved to UK in 2004 when Dyson offered the opportunity to take on the responsibility for EMC Compliance and EMC design. Dyson was at that time not only developing innovative mechanical designs, as it has been for all its history, but also starting to support that intent by making a consistent use of electro-technologies. Since then, the challenge has been maintaining control over traditional applications and at the same time posing the basis for an EMC-sustainable development of new electrical/electronic solutions. The task is not only about making sure that the integration of new technologies meets the EMC requirements but it is also working out reasonable interpretations of the EMC standards where these have been written keeping in mind the traditional way of doing things. Fabio is a member of CISPR SC F, where he maintains an active role in WG1 for the update of the EMC standards relevant to appliances and similar apparatus. The event is an open meeting, with all welcome. There is no charge for meeting attendance. If you plan to attend you need to register by informing: Roy Ediss Email; [email protected] For registration you will need to provide: Name, Company, (if applicable), Book early for the meeting to avoid disappointment.
