Hi Scott:

The requirements for coin cell batteries in UL 60065 and UL 62368-1
were adopted in a voluntary standard to avoid the US Government
adopting a mandatory government standard. See

    http://beta.congress.gov/bill/112th/senate-bill/1165

For UL, if an ITE product had a coin cell in a remote control, in
the spirit of IEC Guide 112 and the UL Multimedia PAG, UL would
assuredly advocate the use of the UL 60065 or UL 62368-1 coin cell
requirements. (Coin cell requirements were not added to UL 60950-1
because of transitional considerations.)

To avoid government regulation of coin cell batteries, ALL usage of
coin cell batteries should comply with IEC/UL 60065 and IEC/UL 62368-1
requirements, regardless of whether the product is subject to these
standards.

Best regards,
Rich

Good day All,

I have two products. One is ITE equipment (60950-1). The other is Audio/Video Equipment (60065). Both have credit card remote controls powered by coin cell batteries.

Given recent amendments to the standards regarding these types of batteries and the ability to remove them (by small persons), I have to ask.

Since the remote controls are battery operated, are they covered by either 60950-1 or 60065 and thus these new requirements? Are they covered because they are shipped in the same box as the product (which are AC Mains powered)? Are they covered even if they are only sold separately?

My first choice is sold separately are not covered by the standards. But if packaged with the products (which are covered), then they are covered (and must comply)?

I hope you all have good news for me...

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Regards,
Scott
