The type of cord required will depend significantly on how it is used. Is your
outdoor equipment a temporary installation or permanent? Does the installation
require a flexible cord for any reason?

In North America, permanently installed outdoor equipment generally requires a
conduit connection. Flexible cables will only be allowed for temporary
installations or where flexibility is required due to a moving components of
the system. You can find water and oil resistant cables such as SOOW type, but
they still may degrade over time with exposure to UV/sunlight. Generally, the
natural rubber cables are more likely to be rated for outdoor use as opposed to
PVC cables. Whether conduit or flexible cables are used, all connectors and
fittings will need to be rated for outdoor use.

For Europe, you are probably still better off with a conduit connection for a
fixed installation. For flexible cables, you will likely find outdoor rated
rubber cables such as H05RN or H07RN types. As with North America, connectors
and fittings will need to be rated for outdoor use.

I cannot comment for China as I have no specific knowledge of the requirements
for this country.

Don Gies' response on the UL 1740 wet location vs. outdoors discussion also has
information that may be useful in regards to outdoor installation of ITE.

Subject: [PSES] outdoor supply cord

Dear Experts,

Does anyone know what standard should be followed for a power supply cord used
to supply outdoor IT equipment? I need requirements for EU, China and US.

I am not sure if normal cords approved to standard IEC 60227 and IEC 60245 can
be used.

Best regards,
Bostjan
