Papers abstracts Powerline Communications - extending the reach, and the frequencies used - John Pink Power line communication (PLC) has become a very well established technology, and is in use in many homes throughout the world. In its present form, restricted to 30MHz it has some limitations as the ever increasing demands of the IoT, and on-demand services grows. This paper will explore those limitations, and the history behind them, looking at why they exist, and looking to the future of PLC with more spectrum available above 30MHz, with the opportunity for overcoming the current bottlenecks. A fresh look at the transmission medium of 'mains wiring', and feed network configuration, will present the difficulties associated with the protection of radio services, as network operator increasingly join the throng of active users, for meter reading, and network control purposes. The paper will show how higher frequencies result in different and challenging engineering requirements to meet the protection of services, Radio and Wired, and of course the Essential Requirements of the EMC Directive. The issue of co-existence with other wired services, which are also now ready for roll-out will be discussed, and look at the challenging measurement issues that the proposed standard raises. Where will this lead next? What is just around the curve? Regulatory Update - Nick Hooper Nick will provide an update on transposition arrangements for the EMC Directive and Radio Equipment Directive, and on the changes to authorisation of radio-frequency equipment in the USA. At the December 2014 IEEE EMC Society meeting, we provided interim guidance on the transition dates for changes to the following European Directives: Old EMCD and R&TTED to New EMCD and RED. The European Commission has now provided a written version of their previous verbal guidance, including the impact on LVD. Nick will provide information on the dates and the changes of scope. On 12 June 2015, the USA Federal Communications Commission published a Final Rule in the Federal Register, updating requirements for the authorisation of Radiofrequency Equipment in the USA, which will take effect from 13 July 2015. Nick will provide an overview of the changes. Resonant HF measuring loop antennas David Lauder Existing loop antennas covering 9 kHz - 30 MHz can be used for 3 m magnetic field measurements required by CISPR 11 and FCC 18 but these active loops exhibit a relatively high measuring system noise floor. Measuring system noise floor can be reduced significantly by using a resonant loop antenna, which is now mentioned in CISPR 16-1-4. Applications include in-situ measurement of radiated emissions below 30 MHz from telecommunication networks, plasma TVs, solar PV installations and wind turbines. This session examines the characteristics and applications of a prototype resonant loop measuring antenna including a demonstration and some measurement examples. Optical EMC EMC is often described as covering frequencies from DC to Daylight but the light-wave frequencies are rarely discussed. However, the push to higher data rates for optical systems coupled with the reduction in size for photonic components and the increase in device density to cope with these demands means that many of the topics familiar to EMC engineers, such as cross-talk, are also valid at these wavelengths. This talk will explore this topic and investigate the implications and difficulties through one simple component: the ring-resonator for add-drop multiplexing Information available on speakers: John Pink Retired from full time employment, John does some occasional consultancy on EMC matters. He was formerly Managing Director of Anritsu UK, the culmination of a long career in the test instrumentation sector, with Hewlett Packard, Scientific Atlanta and Wandel&Goltermann. He established the design and manufacturing arm of Wiltron Company in the UK, specialising in precision Microwave Power measurements, and Network Analysis. Wiltron was later purchased by Anritsu. John was involved in CISPR standards development as long ago as 1970, and was able to return as a contributor to this endeavour on retirement in 2001, this time as an active radio user. He has been a radio amateur since school days. As an IARU EMC WG member he shares responsibility for on-going work on CISPR A (Measurement Methods) and CISPR H (Interference Models). The most recent activity has been on TC210/WG11, with the development of EN50561-1 and the new parts EN 50561-2 and -3. John retains a keen interest in all aspects of EMC from low frequencies up to the low microwave range, ever watchful as new technology is rolled-out, with particular concern for Plasma devices, LED lighting incorporating SM power conversion and Solar energy harvesting systems. Nick Hooper BSc(Eng) CEng MIET SMIEEE Nick is Chairman of the R&TTE Compliance Association, an organization that provides the forum for Notified Bodies under that directive to discuss matters associated with directive with important players in the field such as the European Commission, ECC, ETSI, R&TTE Market Surveillance Authorities and bodies from MRA countries. He is Head of Inspection and Certification at UL (formerly RFI). David Lauder BSc, PhD, CEng, MIET, University of Hertfordshire David Lauder graduated from University of Essex with a BSc Telecommunications Engineering and worked at Marconi Avionics and ITT/STC. He then worked at Hatfield Polytechnic/University of Hertfordshire where he has taught courses in electronics, communications and EMC. He completed a part time PhD in EMC in Wireline Communications and has continued research in this area. Professor Alistair Duffy BEng(Hons), MEng, MBA, PhD, CEng, FIET, IEEE Fellow Alistair Duffy is a Fellow of the IEEE and a past Distinguished Lecturer. His interests are in numerical electromagnetics, measurements and the cross-validation of both of these. He is Professor of Electromagnetics at De Montfort University, Leicester.
