The acceptance of any unlisted electrical component, regardless of voltage, is
up to the local electrical inspector. In practice, many inspectors won't accept
line-voltage products unless they are listed. It is common for low-voltage
products to be overlooked. However, you will likely find more variability in
acceptance of low-voltage lighting products attached to building structure. If
your local inspector is reasonable (and this too has a lot of variability) you
may be able to work with your inspector to have them accept your selected 24V
components. More often than not, I've had local inspectors ignore these types
of low voltage products.

That being said, I had one inspector reject an empty 19" equipment rack because
it didn't have a UL mark. The inspector asked specifically for UL approval.
This was before UL had category
NWIN<http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/showpage.html?&name=NWIN.GuideInfo&ccnshorttitle=Audio/Video,+Information+and+Communication+Technology+Equipment+Cabinet,+Enclosure+and+Rack+Systems&objid=1075704654&cfgid=1073741824&version=versionless&parent_id=1075704653&sequence=1>
and Listing on empty racks was not common. There was quite a bit of discussion
about the necessity of Listing pieces of sheet metal bolted together and bonded
to building ground, but I couldn't convince the inspector to accept the rack. I
wasn't sure what standard would apply to an empty rack, and I asked the
inspector how he wanted it listed. He indicated that he didn't care what
standard it was tested to as long as it got the UL mark. This is a case where
Listing was required on a zero-volt product.

Subject: [PSES] Class II power supply and lighting.

Greetings.

I am putting in some low voltage lighting in my off-grid home. This is in
addition to the usual 120vac lighting. I am having problems locating fixtures
that are specific to 24v that are listed.

Do I need to use listed components when wiring residential? Is that a call
that building inspector will make?
