The applicable standard is still the same as before for the product type. For example, rechargeable electric toothbrushes and cell phones would still use their respective standards.  

The mechanism to do device charging may also differ. Some are inductive and I have seen those that use changing pads with a grid of contacts.    Each has its potential hazards. 

The inductive types may have strong magnetic fields. A number of risks come to mind ranging from pacemakers to interference with sensitive equipment.  Hopefully the EMC radiated emissions standards and human exposure to RF limits come into play.

As for the charging pads and the possibility of pocket change shorting them out, the risk is obviously fire or sparking which could result in fire. While I am not personally familiar with the circuits involved, I imagine this could be handled as either a limited energy circuit (poor charging performsnce) or the grid of contact points can recessed within insulated ribbing.  

In all of these cases, the newest editions IEC-based standards have a section for risk of hazards not covered by the other sections of the standard. It is my belief that these aspects of the product design would fall into that category.   ‎Unfortunately this is unfamiliar territory for many manufacturers and it causes a fair amount of angst.

Hello,

Question.  

How the safety world is dealing with wireless charging products hitting the market?  Which standards are they being certified to?  I'm curious what the main issues with them are if there are any.  I assume they aren't overloaded if someone places a pile of metal coins (or their hand) between a charger and their cell phone for example.
