I'm wondering if it's clear in this case that certification is normally required only for 'safety-critical components'. These are usually identified by examining the schematic and, if necessary, carrying out single-fault tests. Components whose failure short- or open-circuit, and in some cases large change in electrical value), do not violate safety in respect of fire, electric shock, mechanical injury, burn or radiation, do not need to be certified. The exception being those used for EMI filters. The best you can do is in your critical components list is identify manufacturer, manufacturer part number and any additional data like values, voltage rating, temperature rating, flammability, etc., as available. Also, when I say manufacturer, I mean the original manufacturer, not distributors such as allied, digikey and so on. Same goes for not identifying component brokers. For the circuit board itself, it is likely that the best you can do is get the laminate type, maximum operating temperature, flammability rating such as 94 V0 and the comparative tracking index like CTI 175, or similar. It should be noted that PCB fabrication houses seldom give you the correct temperature rating as they generally think in terms of maximum processing temperature when making the board. That is what's referred to as the glass transition temperature (Tg) and this is not the maximum operating temperature you will want. Our listing agency (ETL) has requested a component list including file numbers, which has been pretty standard practice when listing our other products (commercial HVAC) however I have been struggling to find listings (UL/CSA) for inductors and capacitors for a circuit board project. I'm still very new in the product safety world (just over 1 year) and circuit boards are new territory for myself and my company and since I am the lone product safety engineer I am looking for some guidance on locating listing information for the fore mentioned components. I have searched the UL and CSA listing database and have attempted to contact the manufactures without much success. I'm also seeking general advice in regards to circuit board safety compliance. What do you know now that you wish you knew before? Thanks in advance. Konnor Buxton Certification Coordinator Project Engineer AAON Inc. 2425 S.
