IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society Join us for our next virtual chapter meeting! We will meet Thu Sept 19th, 2019 at 12 noon EDT (Time in New York), to cover Power supply safety by Gary Tornquist. Originally given at the ISPCE 2019 in San Jose this presentation considers where safety issues may still be lurking in power supplies, after all the functional, quality and regulatory requirements have been satisfied. The presentation focuses on high volume, low power consumer power supplies used for example with personal computers or cell phones. A general rule is proposed, most issues will exist in interface boundaries of all types. The probability of a safety issue occurring in any given power supply unit are very low, but if enough are manufactured the risk cannot be ignored. Example concerns are drawn from both theory and experience, and some good practices for mitigations are presented. Details for the webex meeting were sent through IEEE Notice on Sept 17th. Holding a BS in engineering from Caltech and MS EE from UCLA, Mr. Tornquist has >25 years experience as an engineer and manager for electronic companies such as Hughes Aircraft, Hewlett Packard and most recently the Director of Product Safety at Microsoft Corp. Along the way he earned an MBA at Emory University and is a Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator. He has designed power electronics, microwave test equipment, data acquisition & telecommunication equipment, information technology and consumer electronics.
