Hi David, I understand that only non-radio functions are affected by ESD testing, but that you deem this acceptable according to the non-radio product immunity requirements of EN 55035. The introduction of EN 301 489-1 states: "When it is required to evaluate the EMC performance of "combined radio and non-radio equipment", ETSI EG 203 367 [i.3] provides guidance upon the application of the various harmonised standards, including the present document, that could potentially apply to such equipment." Clause 5.1.2.3.1 of ETSI EG 203 367 V1.1.1 defines: "When assessing the immunity of the non-radio function of the combined equipment, the performance criteria from the relevant harmonised EMC standard should be used. In most cases these will be contained within the harmonized standard that the non-radio part of the combined equipment would have found itself falling under." Based on this guidance, the behaviour described may be deemed acceptable, if the radio function is not affected by ESD.
Kind regards, Bernd Von: David Shidlovsky <dav...@itlglobal.org> Gesendet: Mittwoch, 10. März 2021 08:02 An: EMC-PSTC@LISTSERV.IEEE.ORG Betreff: [PSES] FW: ESD Failure per EN 301 489-1 vs EN 55035 Hello all, 1. One of our customers manufactures coffee printers. 2. Recently the customer has manufactured a new model to which he has added a CE approved radio 2.4 GHz module. 3. Since the coffee printer is not equivalent to the host used for the initial assessment of the module, according to ETSI EG 203 367 V1.1.1 (2016-06), the printer needs to be fully tested for both EN 301 489-1;-17 and the relevant EMCD standards. 4. The radio transmission is used to send information via Wi-Fi to the printer and the printer starts printing after receiving the information. The TX/RX do not operate at the same time as the printing. 5. According to EN 301 489-1 Clause 6.2: * The application of the transient phenomena shall not result in a change of the mode of operation (e.g. unintended transmission) or the loss of critical stored data. * After application of the transient phenomena, the equipment shall operate as intended. 6. During ESD testing, the printer stopped printing and the customer had to press a button on the control panel to continue printing. TX/Rx was not interrupted. 7. For EN 55035 the pressing of the button to continue the print job is OK in our opinion. 8. Is the stopping of the print job considered "the equipment shall operate as intended" according clause 6.2 of EN 301 489-1? 9. There is some internal some disagreement concerning this issue. 10. I would appreciate any opinions. Thanks in advance for any responses.
