Yesterday I was able, for the first time, to get the effect (multiple discharges in the supply) from a high voltage oscillator producing 1400 Volt pulses that I built for about $10 as opposed to a commercial device costing over $10,000 (ESD gun or EFT pulser)!!! So now I can apply a few hundred thousand pulses (one per second) in a week during working hours to look for changes in the supply that might be safety issues or be a harbinger of failure in the field. ESD guns cannot be used this way and EFT generators likely will not let me pulse once per second as that is so different that what is required for 61000-4-4.
An applied pulse elicited multiple 1,000+ Volt pulses generated in the power supply and released into the environment as if I had applied additional ESD hits. Having such pulses unleashed in the middle of one’s system would certainly raise the risk of system malfunction.
