Hi John,

For Continental Europe, my company has three plug types for continental Europe;
the most common being Type F, the Swiss plug for Switzerland and the Italian
plug for Italy. These are products with an IEC 60320 C13/C14 appliance coupler,
so customers could easily replace the cord if they wanted to. I do not know if
those customers do switch cords after receiving our products.

I spend half of 2006 working in Denmark one week each month. Even back then,
the Schuko was common. The hotels I stayed in and the offices I worked in had
Schuko receptacles. My company has been shipping products with the Schuko plug
to Denmark, and I am not aware of any issues. It's a small country of only 6
million people. With its Jutland peninsula attached to the German mainland,
cross-border travel and trade has been common for a long time.

My company does ship Class I products to Switzerland with their national plug.
I can't state how strongly regulations are enforced, but I would expect that
with large borders and common languages with France and Germany, you might find
products from those countries. My recommendation would be to provide a Swiss
plug though to be in compliance with the regulations. My closest friend in
Switzerland lives on the Italian border in Chiasso, so I mostly saw Swiss plugs
there. (The cross-border trade was mostly Italians coming in to Switzerland to
put their money into Swiss banks.)

I didn't think to ask my son to look at plugs and outlets when he went on a
trip to Israel a few years ago, so I don't have much first-hand knowledge. My
company ships products with the Israeli plug to Israel.

I won't speak much on whether or not to provide an adaptor. I don't have
experience with that as I've only worked for two companies over the past 26
years, and both had policies requiring providing a plug meeting national
regulations, and policies against providing adaptors with plugs.

Ted Eckert

The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of my
employer or those of the electrical authorities of Denmark, Switzerland, or
Israel.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [PSES] International Plug issues and insight

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some in country insight on Denmark, Switzerland and Israel.

  *   Denmark (Type K or Type F):

     * My understanding is the country regulations used to require Type F
plugs for appliances but have since been expanded to accept Type F (Schuko)
outlets and plugs
     * I'm told Type K remains the most common outlet type in the country.
But I can't seem to find data confirming that.

     * I'm seeing an issue - A Type F plug will fit into a Type K outlet, but
then a grounded product will not be protected. If you have a grounded product,
is it sufficient to stipulate to be sure to use the grounded outlet?

  *   Switzerland (Type J):
     * My understanding is Swiss regulations require Type J outlets and Type
J plugs for appliances
     * I'm told Swiss regulations restrict the import and/or sale of
appliances with any plug type other than Type J

     * My understanding is that the regulations are not strongly enforced and
therefore it is common practice for manufacturers to sell Type F plug devices
into the country and rely on end users to use plug adapters or to sell their
products with adapters.

     * Can anyone offer insight on this?

  *   Israel (Type H):
     * SII regulations require Type H outlets and Type H plugs for appliances
     * SII regulations restrict the import and/or sale of appliances with any
plug type other than Type H

     * Is it common practice for importers to add an adaptor to the product
so it complies?
Any insight on any of these country specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards and Be Safe,

John
