I'm not a ubuntu user and apparently missed the beginning of this thread but have to reiterate a couple of things.
1. Just because the write process finished for a CD doesn't imply that the burning of the CD was done correctly. In fact I've just gone through a Fedora Core 6 install and had numerous issues with CD's I burnt from FC4. In the end I did the following: A. made sure the write speed was set to 4, B. used XCDROAST, and C. made sure that the disks verified with the Fedora install program. So the disk its self could always be the problem. 2. Make sure the downloaded file is good. This is obvious but shouldn't be skipped. 3. There are always the possibility of BIOS issues. The question that comes to mind is the installer seeing the drive (HD)? I know that people have already mentioned the above items, but highlight them due to issues I've run into installing Linux over the years. This all over dial up access.
