Just a heads up as one who went through the PID tuning not too long ago.
Before even trying to adjust the PID values, make absolutely sure all of
your ini file parameters are correct / reasonable. I was tuning my PIDs at
the same time some of the units changed in the ini files, and ended up using
an accel intended for mm when I was using inches, and managed to drop one of
the zeros from the base period. I must have looked at the ini files 10 times
before I noticed my error and in the process could not figure out why I
could not get my motors to tune.

Once I had these values set correctly, the PID tuning then was really quite
easy and I was able to do it entirely by ear. I brought up P until the
motors hummed, backed off a little, then slowly incremented P and D until I
was getting a position error of about 1-2 encoder counts or less on a short
move (entering values such as G1 X10 through the MDI interface). With "I", I
started with a value of 5, and never had a reason to change it.
