I agree with Rafael: install DOS first, in the first partition, and leave lots of empty unpartitioned space. Keep the DOS partition small so it doesn't get confused. Then tell the Ubuntu installer to use the remaining empty space on the disk. I have a few DOS apps I still use, especially AutoCAD, but I run it under FreeDOS under qemu under Ubuntu.
