How are they planning to implement the Ethernet communication? Ethernet is great for things like file transfers between computers-the task it was designed for-but has a some overhead required for reliable real time operations.
They might want to consider using ACN-Architecture for Control Networks. The packet structure already includes everything they would need for reliable communication.
