If you get the message "realtime already running", then issue:
halcmd unload all
realtime stop
the second command may need a path:
/etc/init.d/realtime stop
On my system (ubuntu 6.06, emc2.1-sim package, urxvt terminal) closing a
terminal window where halrun is running doesn't lead to any problems.
