Normally the 'run forever' syndrome of the ubuntu live cd is caused by not 
having enough main memory (constantly accessing the cd).  I have found that 
128mb is not enough to boot from the live cd.  I have not had a problem with 
256mb - others have needed more.  After ubuntu is installed - you could 
probably remove the extra memory.  But hey - memory is cheap.
