I set up some Yaskawa ServoPak drives (SGDP I think was the model)
using my Universal Stepper Controller, and it was quite an amazing system.
I used it in step/direction mode, and tried it both open-loop and with the
ServoPak's encoder outputs connected to the Stepper Controller, so you could
go to e-stop, spin the motor by hand, and then go back to CNC mode and
it would
maintain position throughout. I had no tuning problems at all, it was
an amazingly
dynamic system. I didn't want to mar the motor shafts, but it felt like
I could have
put a pair of vise-grips on the shaft and not moved the motor a fraction
of a degree.

If you use it closed-loop, you want very little P gain in the computer loop.
