Glad to hear you got to the bottom of that problem. The new jogwheel velocity mode that you were asking for is in 2.1.4, so you can go back to using a regular install instead of messing with CVS if you want. I've tested velocity mode and I think it does exactly what you want, but please give us some feedback once you've tried it.
