I do not bother with simulating the topslide (compound) as I only use it manually for threading and it is best to have a screen button or macro to do that as a built in cycle. Long tapers get CAMmed. I use encoders with higher than the 100 CPR of a conventional MPG and with no clicks - bust a "friction detent". It is not hard to set the diameter X DRO to a couple of microns that way. I have had several machinists turning with confidence with electronic handwheels from the first cut. For a lower cost solution which takes slightly longer to get used to on can use AV style Jog/Shuttle dials. I also have some built-in cycles for turning a length down to size, facing off, chamfering etc. You cas see it in use at www.castlewoodconsultants.com/Misc/IntelligentLathe3.wmv Sorry it's all Mach3 stuff but principles are common :=) John Prentice ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
