Hi Jim

IMO the place to start is to think a bit about the machine you wish to
connect it to.  As you probably know EMC2 can be configured for many
kinds of devices and there are configurations for several as a part of
the distribution.  Once you've found a config that's close answer yes to
the "copy that config to your home directory" popup.

Now a bit of reading in the User Manual (menu -- Applications -> CNC ->
EMC2 User Manual) on configuration ought to get you going.  You'll
notice that I assumed you are using a standard install of EMC -- Ubuntu.
That's another of those pesky variables that makes your notion of easy
configuration less easy.
