This gives a scale of 6000 counts/mm, too high for software counting at much speed. I don't have the config from back when I was using software pwm and quadrature on the parport... Interestingly I think my driver is set up to short the motor windings when the signal is off - I always thought of this as a bug that luckily didn't seem to hurt, but from what Peter says, it might be why it works well.
