u prolly want the vfd to be master because it has hardware failsafes builtin, I 
have the same vfd and i would not loose that front face plate. Use the modbus 
under the cover, read teh manual and get back to me with ur findings please.

The manual shows it connected that way. I'll have to check under the
cover. Although I think the front panel may use a different protocol and
would be a master. I would want EMC to be a master also, which may not
work. I'll have to do more research.
