A fixed DRO would be a handy tool to aid in setup of stepper based
machines. It also could be used as a reference point at several times
during each tool. Just insert a G04 delay or M00 program stop. ( for
operator visual comparison )

It might be also possible to import the DRO's position values and
compare them to EMC's position reading then use a macro if/then test to
decide if the two values per axis differ more than your acceptable
amount. This check would have to be done only while machine is
stationary.

A DRO would als be handy during machine building and tuning of a servo
system. But once the machine was completed about the only use I could
foresee is using the DRO to set position via G92 if machine did not
have good home to index or other repeatable homing.

Just my dimes worth. ( thats 2 cents adjusted for the devaluation of
the U.S. Dollar)
