Whenever a mail transfer agent (a program running on a hopefully
trusted server at your ISP) attempts to send a mail message to
another mail transfer agent or a mail server, it is usually
requested to authenticate itself. What that does is require the
sending MTA to respond to a message sent to it. If it does,
then it is pretty clear it really is at the IP address it says
it is at, and the IP addr hasn't been forged. Either
SourceForge's mail server was not, until recently, requiring
authentication, or now GoDaddy's MTA is requiring you to set up
something before they will authenticate outgoing mail on your
behalf.
