The Gecko 540's are out! If I was converting a mini mill to steppers I would 
use 
Gecko drives, AutomationDirect Steppers, Antek power supply and if required a 
CNC4PC bob. Oh wait that is what I used on my plasma cutter and every thing 
works without problems. 

The 540 connects with a parallel cable to the pc so that part is easy. The 
motors 
connect with  a DB 9 plug... which you would have to connect to. WOW I just 
read 
the whopping 3 page manual on the 540. That is so easy to hook up it the even 
have a picture diagram showing the wiring. 

I'm not saying that the same setup it right for you, just that it is/was right 
for me. You 
have to make that decision on which one is right for you. The more information 
you 
have the better.
